SWK EDC helps the region rake in millions in grant funding

In 2021, the SWK EDC launched the Getting Ready to Win (GR2W) initiative.  The initiative engages multiple stakeholders and partners to ensure the South Western Kentucky region is investing in economic site development, infrastructure and quality of life, and workforce development.

These efforts have resulted in the launching of the SWK IGNITE workforce program, the Fort Campbell TAP into Opportunities program, and significant investment in infrastructure by city and county governments throughout South Western Kentucky.

In addition to these efforts, the SWK EDC has also coordinated the writing and funding of eleven grants totaling nearly $4 million for site and workforce development.  Grants have contributed to the funding of two 100,000SF shell buildings, due diligence at large development sites, utility infrastructure, new roads, improvements in our existing industrial parks, and rail extensions.

Project announcements, including Ascend Elements and Novelis, have also served as catalysts for additional development including over $75M in electric transmission line, new road infrastructure and a new bridge over the CSX Mainline in Hopkinsville’s Commerce Park II, and a federal grant for improvements along Highway 79 in South Todd County, KY.

Sharon Butts, Associate Director for the SWK EDC, commented, “We take great pride in working with our local leaders and stakeholders to ensure our region is prepared to compete and win.  We don’t have the luxury of knowing when we may get a corporate site visit so we must stay diligent as we prepare for those opportunities.  Because of these grants, we continue to have an outstanding portfolio of speed to market, shovel ready, and large development sites.”

Since 2020, the South Western Kentucky region has celebrated fifteen industry announcements or expansions totaling over 1500 new jobs and nearly $2B in new capital investment highlighted by Ascend Elements, EZ Access, and Toyota Boshoku in Christian County, Novelis  and Delavan Ag Pumps in Todd County, and Load Covering Solutions in Trigg County.

“We are thrilled to play a small part in the meaningful work of economic development, and we feel fortunate that our region is experiencing transformation investments and historic opportunities.  Furthermore, our strategic partners and leadership remain committed to preparing for the future so we can sustain this tremendous economic momentum while continuing to improve our region’s quality of life.  We continue to invite industries and companies to come grow with us in our less taxing, more relaxing region.”
